Have you ever been to a workout class where all the movements seem almost impossible? You leave the class wondering what you truly did besides run out of breath and become uncomfortably sore. Chances are the workout class you took was in a room full of people with an instructor who isn't correcting anyones form.
Specifically, HIIT workout classes can be the most dangerous forms of exercise. These workout classes encourage mostly very novice people to preform very difficult moves. These difficult, advanced moves are normally not safe for people without proper training to preform and can actually lead to injury in the long term. The upbeat music and motivating crowd makes people push themselves harder than they should.
It is really important to understand form and how to preform certain exercises before taking an advanced class. If you do not know how to properly engage muscles or properly stand during certain exercises you can end up injuring yourself or straining your muscles. That is why people leave workout classes extremely sore and with a hurt back. There is no instructor coming around to make sure that each person is using the proper weight and using the proper form. Instead, they push people to work harder and up their weight even though they may not be able to.
This is especially true since COVID-19 and instructors are forced to remain further away from their customers. Trainers are not able to fully watch their clients, and even with online classes and videos, the instruction decreases even more.
It is best to start off in the gym getting the proper form for working out before going to an advanced class. Having the basics down and taking things slow is better than rushing into a workout and getting injured.
I went to a workout class recently that was marketed as pilates, and it was so difficult I was inflamed and sore for a week afterwards. While some people like to do really intense work out classes, I do not, and I felt wholly unprepared. Additionally, the instructors gave me no corrections or alternatives to moves that I wasn't strong enough to do. I came out of the class feeling defeated, and in pain. Thankfully, I do other workout classes that make me feel good, but I couldn't shake the feeling that maybe someone else tried that same class, and decided they didn't like working out because of that one class. I agree with everything you said in this post,…
I don't really like doing group workouts, but I have heard stories from friends about people passing out in these shared classes that gyms often offer. People can take things way too fast when it comes to fitness, when they would still see results while mastering the basics or doing more low-intensity workouts- they also tend to be more sustainable, which is pretty essential.
This is so true! I think about this alot, especially when I remember getting a gym membership in 2021 and was so tempted by some of the classes offered. However, I only stuck with bicycling and am glad I did just because some of the classes were so intense it could go horribly wrong. I used to do high intensity workouts for swimming in high school, and some of college, and I don't wish them upon ANYONE. Haha but honestly, good topic to focus on as people deserve the warning to some forms of new marketed exercise.
